White Vault is an android application platform designed to securely store passwords and documents.
// Overview
The Challenge
People commonly keep their important documents, personal files, and passwords in various places, including mobile devices, computers, cloud platforms, and note-taking applications. Storing information across multiple locations can make it challenging to manage, organize, and quickly access important data when required.
It may also increase the chances of data loss, unintended sharing, or unauthorized access to sensitive information. In addition, passwords are sometimes saved in unsafe forms, such as plain text notes or unprotected files, which can expose them to significant security threats.
// Approach
Process & Design
I started by identifying the problem of sensitive documents and passwords being scattered across different storage locations and often kept in insecure forms. This led me to design White Vault as a centralized local vault where passwords and documents could be managed through a simple interface. I focused on minimizing unnecessary steps while keeping sensitive data protected through user authentication, SHA-256 hashing, SQLCipher-encrypted database storage, and controlled file handling.
Research
I identified the problem after noticing that my friends often forgot where they had stored their passwords and saved documents. This led me to explore the need for a single, secure place to organize and access sensitive information.
Design
Planned a simple dark-themed vault interface with separate sections for passwords and documents, using cards and straightforward navigation to keep information organized and easy to access.
Development
Implemented authentication, SHA-256 hashing, Room with SQLCipher encryption, JSON-based application data storage, Base64 file encoding, dynamic card generation, and PDF viewing.
Refine
Tested and improved database operations, file handling, card interactions, loading states, document viewing, and overall responsiveness to create a smoother and more secure user experience.
